Remote Does Not Mean Anywhere: A Location Eligibility Guide

“Remote” describes where work happens, not necessarily where an employee may live. This guide explains the location language candidates should verify before spending time on an application.

Remote work still has borders

Employers may restrict remote hiring because of payroll registration, employment law, tax exposure, security requirements, time-zone coverage, or customer obligations. A role can be fully remote and still be limited to one country, province, state, or list of approved jurisdictions.

Start with the location field, but do not stop there. Qualifications, compensation notes, and application questions may contain narrower rules than the headline location.

How common labels should be read

“US remote” normally means the employee must be authorized and resident somewhere in the United States. “Canada remote” normally means the equivalent within Canada. “North America” often includes both, but the employer may support only selected jurisdictions. “Americas” can describe time-zone coverage rather than employment eligibility. “Worldwide” is the broadest label, yet contractor-only arrangements or excluded countries may still apply.

  • Country named: treat it as a hard boundary unless the body says otherwise.
  • State or province list: confirm that your jurisdiction appears explicitly.
  • Time-zone requirement: distinguish working hours from legal hiring location.
  • Worldwide: check employment type, payroll entity, and work authorization.
  • Remote with no qualifier: verify before assuming eligibility.

A five-minute pre-application check

Open the employer's original posting and search for location, residence, authorization, sponsorship, payroll, and time-zone terms. Confirm whether compensation changes by location and whether travel or office attendance is required. If the language conflicts, use the narrowest stated condition until the employer clarifies it.

This check is particularly valuable for candidates in Canada viewing a US-headquartered company. “North America” is a stronger signal than “remote,” while a salary expressed only in USD is not proof that Canadian employment is supported.

How our US and Canada labels work

techjobsremote.org derives broad eligibility labels from the source location text. Explicit US language adds the US label; explicit Canada language adds Canada; North America or worldwide adds both. A listing tied only to EMEA, APAC, LATAM, or another unsupported region is excluded.

These labels are a discovery aid, not legal advice or an employer guarantee. The original careers page controls, which is why every listing preserves a direct source link and why this site does not create state-specific job pools from a national US label.

Limitations and corrections

Location language is not standardized across applicant-tracking systems. Employers can also update descriptions between refreshes. If a normalized label conflicts with the source, send the listing URL and the conflicting passage to hello@techjobsremote.org so it can be checked during the next crawl.
